    August 2017

Dear Meany Middle School Scholars and Families,

What an honor it is for me to welcome you to the exciting new reopening year of Meany Middle School!

I am looking forward to the first day of school. It is important to me to meet and authentically get to know all of our scholars and families. I am equally excited to see all of the families I have met over the last year during our planning meetings again. The staff and I have been working hard this summer to prepare for the start of school.

Thinking ahead to the first day of school can be stressful for all of the scholars and their families. Relax and be assured that we have terrific plans in place that will help make a smooth transition to our new school. Transition plans will begin with an orientation and tour on the first day of school, Wednesday, September 6, 2017. It is important that every scholar has an opportunity to participate without having to worry about transportation or parental/guardian supervision. Students will also be issued their schedules on the first day of school.

The following is additional information that will help us all get off to a smooth start this school year:

    • Daily Meany Middle School Hours: 8:55 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Scholars should be in the building no later than 8:50 am in order to be in class by 8:55. School is dismissed at 3:45.
    • The first day of school is Wednesday, September 6th, 2017
      • If your scholar is not taking the bus, please have her/him arrive between 8:25 -8:50 am.
      • Upon arrival at school, all students should report to their “Advisory” or first period class. Homeroom class assignments will be available on the first day of school. Meany staff members will be available in the hallways to welcome scholars and to help them find their classes. On the first day of school, in Advisory, scholars will receive their full schedules and go on a tour to make sure they know where all of their classes will be held.
    • Attendance Policy: Attending school every day is very important. Illnesses and family emergencies are valid excuses for an absence. On the day of the absence, a parent/guardian can call the attendance office to explain the situation. If a call is not made, on the day after the absence, the scholar must bring a note from a parent/guardian that includes the date, reason for the absence and a parent or guardian signature. Punctuality and regular attendance are top priorities at Meany and help us to make sure every scholar is successful.
    • Transportation: The Transportation Office will mail information regarding transportation directly to you. If you have questions about bus service, please call the Transportation Office at 252-0900.
    • Lunchroom: The breakfast program will be available starting on the first day. School lunch options will also be available each day. Please be sure your scholar has a sack lunch if he/she does not plan to get a school lunch.
    • Scholar Planner: The Scholar Planner will be distributed and discussed with all scholars. Please take a few minutes to review the Handbook at the beginning of the planner with your child during the first week of school. With a real partnership with families (reviewing the handbook is a great place to start) we can provide the kind of learning environment at Meany that we desire.
    • Meany School Supplies: A school supply list is provided in this mailing. You can also find the supply list on the Meany Middle School SPS website.

For now, please enjoy the rest of your summer. All of us here at Meany are very much looking forward to seeing you soon. I am confident that with all of us working as a cohesive team, each and every Meany scholar will excel this year—let’s have an outstanding year together!

    Yours in Leadership and Service,

    Chanda E. Oatis, Principal
    Go Mountain Lions!
