    August 2018

Dear Meany Middle School Scholars and Families,

What an honor it is for me to welcome you to another exciting year at Meany Middle School! I am overjoyed to be the principal of Meany and I am excited to return for my second year!

I have always loved the first days of school. It gives me an opportunity to meet new scholars and families personally. I am equally excited to see all of our returning scholars again. The staff and I have been working hard this summer to prepare for the start of school.

Thinking ahead to the first day of middle school for sixth-graders or other new scholars to our school, and their families, can be stressful. Relax and rest assured that we have terrific plans in place that will help make a smooth transition to your new school. Those plans will begin with an orientation.

New Parent Orientation, Wednesday, September 5 (9:05 – 9:35 am), for parents/guardians who are new to Meany (all grade levels). This event will be a time to learn more about our school and meet some staff. I hope you can join us for this important meeting.

As an additional part of our sixth-grade transition program, the first day of school
Wednesday, September 5th will be for sixth-graders only. Thursday, September 6th will be the first day for seventh- and eighth-graders and will be the second day for sixth-graders.
While our new sixth-graders are in school on September 5th for their full-day orientation, seventh- and eighth-graders do not have school. School for all Meany scholars will begin on September 6th.

    Reminder of Important Dates:
    1. First day of school for sixth-graders --- Wednesday, September 5th, 8:55 am - 3:45 pm
    2. New Family Orientation --- Wednesday, September 5th, 9:05 - 9:35 am
    3. First day of school for seventh- and eighth-graders --- Thursday, September 6th, 8:55 am - 3:45 pm

The following is additional information that will help us all get off to a smooth start this school year:

Daily Meany School Hours: 8:55 am – 3:45 pm, except on Wednesdays (early release day), which will be 8:55 am - 2:30 pm. Scholars should be in the building no later than 8:50 am in order to be in class by 8:55 am.

The all-day orientation for sixth-graders only will be on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018.

Other details pertaining to the first sixth-grade day:

    • If your scholar is not taking the bus, please have her/him arrive between 8:20 -8:45am.

    • Upon arrival at school, all sixth-graders should report to the cafeteria. At the first bell they should report to their “Advisory” or first period class. Homeroom class assignments will be available on Schoology and on the first day in the main hall. Meany staff members will be available in the hallways to welcome scholars and to help them find their Homeroom classes. On the first day of school, in Homeroom, scholars will receive their full schedules and go on a tour to make sure they know where all of their classes will be held.

    • Once the scholars are in class, interested parents/guardians are invited to an optional orientation meeting in the cafeteria at 9:05 am.

    • School is dismissed at 3:45 pm.

    • On the first day, we will be sending home a manila envelope filled with important papers—please ask your scholar for it and return these important forms to us.

Attendance Policy: Attending school every day is very important. Illnesses and family emergencies are valid excuses for an absence. On the day of the absence, a parent/guardian can call the attendance office at
206-413-2104 to explain the situation. If a call is not made, on the day after the absence, the scholar must bring a note from a parent/guardian that includes the date, reason for the absence and a parent or guardian signature. Punctuality and regular attendance are top priorities at Meany and help us to make sure every scholar is successful.

Transportation: The Transportation Office will mail information regarding transportation directly to you. If you have questions about bus service, please call the Transportation Office at 206-252-0900.

Drop-off/Pick-Up: Traffic is very tight in our neighborhood so to respect our neighbors, we request bus traffic only on 21st Ave E., and parent drop-off and pick up should take place on East Republican Street. 20th Avenue East is residential parking only. The Miller parking lot belongs to the community center but they are generous enough to allow our staff to park there during the day, so please do not use this parking lot for pick up and drop off.

Lunchroom: The breakfast program will be available starting on the first day. School lunch options will also be available each day. Please be sure your scholar has a sack lunch if he/she does not plan to get a school lunch.

Counselors: The counseling staff are available for parent/guardian consultation. Please call for an appointment with the grade-level counselor, or to simply ask a question.

    • Ms. Baker, our Head Counselor, will be counseling our sixth and seventh-grade scholars, crowens@seattleschools.org.
    • Ms. Hayes will be counseling eighth-graders this year. Please call the main office at 206.413.2100 to contact Ms. Hayes.

Scholar Planner: The Scholar Planner will be distributed and discussed in Homeroom. Please take a few minutes to review the Handbook with your child during the first week of school. Many specifics about the schedule, resources, etc. are explained in the handbook. With a real partnership with families (reviewing the handbook is a great place to start) we can provide the kind of learning environment at Meany that enables us to consistently achieve our mission.

School Supplies: We hope that scholars can bring school supplies, including:
    • A three-ring binder
    • Two Composition Notebooks (7 ½ x 9 ¾ in. - 100 sheets – wide ruled)
    • Five three-hole punched folders (to go in the binder)
    • Three-hole punched lined paper
    • Pens & Pencils
    • Calculator
    • Backpack
Note: A detailed list of Meany’s school supplies can be found here. Please notify a Meany staff member if you need assistance obtaining supplies.

August Homework: That’s right, homework in August. Fortunately, it is fun—
Reading! Please read thirty minutes every night—the educational benefit and the enjoyment make the time spent reading rewarding on many levels.

For now, please enjoy the rest of your summer. All of us here at Meany are very much looking forward to seeing you soon. I am confident that with all of us working as a cohesive team, each and every Meany scholar will excel this year—let’s have an outstanding year together!

    Sincerely,

    Chanda E. Oatis, Principal
