Academics

Meany Academics Overview

Meany Middle School teachers align instruction to the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. Our teachers use Data Driven Instructional Practices. We have a collective focus on Reading and Math Intervention. We offer classes of intervention in the Master Schedule as well as after-school and over breaks (winter, mid-winter and spring).

Curriculum

Our teachers use the following curriculum:

  • MMS Math – CCSS, CMP2 and Khan Academy
  • MMS ELA – CCSS and Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Workshop
  • MMS Science – CCSS, NGSS and Amplify Science by Lawrence Hall of UC Berkeley
  • MMS History – Seattle Public School Adoption including:
  • Sixth-grade world history: McGraw Hill’s “Discovering Our Past: A History of the World – Early Ages”
  • Seventh-grade world history: Holt McDougal’s “World History: Ancient Civilizations through the Renaissance” and Washington State History
  • Eighth-grade U.S. history: Holt McDougal’s “United States History: Beginnings to 1914”

Homework

Homework Policy:

Homework is assigned either to reinforce skills that have been learned or taught throughout the school day, or to complete tasks and projects that were begun in class. Additional time would be expected of high school level courses and music classes. If a student is absent more than three consecutive days, homework will be provided and if absences continue, more will be provided upon the return of the initial assignments. The amount of homework will vary by class and offers an opportunity to build strengths and complete long-term progress.

Assessments

We use the following assessments to further guide our support of students:

  • Math Data Analysis – MAP scores and SBA scores
  • Reading Data Analysis – SRI scores and SBA Scores

Within each content area we access student progress using the following:

  • Math – Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) – Fall, Winter and Spring
  • Reading – SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) – Fall, Winter and Spring
  • Writing – On Demand (pre and post) – Argumentative, Narrative and Explanatory/Informational
  • History – Classroom Based Assessments (CBA), Unit Assessment/Tests
  • Science – Classroom Based Assessments (CBA), Unit Assessments/Tests

Master Schedule Additional Supports:
